The Negaunee Music Institute at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, in partnership with Greater Chicago’s leading community music schools and youth orchestras, presents the 2017 CHICAGO YOUTH IN MUSIC FESTIVAL



The CHICAGO YOUTH IN MUSIC FESTIVAL is a celebration of young classical musicians from across Greater Chicago. It is presented by the Negaunee Music Institute at the CSO in partnership with the city’s leading community music schools and youth orchestras. Artistic leadership is provided by Chicago Symphony Orchestra Music Director Riccardo Muti, Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant Yo-Yo Ma, and musicians of the CSO and Civic Orchestra of Chicago. Participation in the Festival and all related events are offered free of charge and target diverse audiences.

Civic Orchestra Fellows Residencies at Community Youth Orchestra Programs
Monday, February 6 – Wednesday, February 22


Fellows from the Civic Orchestra will be in residence at The People’s Music School at Hibbard Elementary School, Sistema Ravinia at Catalyst Circle Rock Charter School, and the Chicago Metamorphosis Orchestra Project at Mary Lyon Elementary School, coaching young musicians at each program, and later welcoming them at Symphony Center to observe a Civic rehearsal and to play side-by-side.

Students participating in the Civic Fellow residencies will convene at Symphony Center for coaching and to play side-by-side with Civic in a super orchestra of approximately two hundred people.

85 young string players from six partner organizations will come together for coaching and side-by-side playing with CSO musicians and Yo-Yo Ma.



Crain-Maling Foundation CSO Young Artists Competition

String finalists will play live with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, competing for a chance to solo with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra during its 2017/18 season.
